Helio Alves started playing piano at the age of six in his native Sao Paulo, Brazil. After training classically as a child, Helio segued into jazz and enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

He moved to New York City and soon started working with Claudio Roditi, Paquito D’Rivera, Yo-Yo Ma, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, Dianne Reeves, John Pizzarelli, Slide Hampton, Dave Samuels, Andy Narell, Oscar Castro- Neves, Gato Barbieri, David Sanchez, The New York Voices and Paul Winter to name a few.

Helio toured extensively with saxophone legend Joe Henderson, playing major jazz festivals around the world.

Helio also works regularly with Brazilian singers Joyce Moreno, Rosa Passos, Maucha Adnet and Vinicius Cantuaria.

He is featured on over 50 recordings as a sideman, including the Grammy Award winning CDs “Joe Henderson Big Band” (Verve, 1996), “Obrigado Brazil” by Yo-Yo Ma (Sony/Classical, 2003), and “Brazilian Dreams” by Paquito D’Rivera (MCG, 2002). He also played on the Grammy nominated albums “Samba Jazz Fantasia”( Malandro Records, 2002) by Duduka Da Fonseca, and “Forests” (Zoho, 2008) by the Brazilian Trio, which he co leads.

Helio is also featured on “Samba Jazz & Outras Bossas”, “Slow Music”, “Tudo” , “Raiz”, “Cool”, “Palavra e Som” and “50” by Joyce Moreno, “Amorosa”, “Samba Dobrado” and “Amanha Vai Ser Verão” by Rosa Passos, “Sinatra and Jobim @50” by John Pizzarelli, “Slide Plays Jobim” by Slide Hampton and “Constelação” by the Brazilian Trio.

Helio has 5 albums as a leader,:“Trios”, released in 1997, “Portrait in Black and White”, released in 2004, “It’s Clear” released in 2009, and“Musica” released in 2011. He’s also featured on “Milage”, a duo album with singer Maucha Adnet, “Songs From The Last Century”(2005), co leading with Duduka Da Fonseca, and “Constelação” by the Brazilian Trio and “Musica” with Reuben Rogers, Antonio Sánchez, Claudio Roditi and Romero Lubambo
